An exciting new opening has been introduced at South Devon Vet Hospital. Great work-life balance for a final year SVN to expand our small but fabulous team in South Devon which is home to a first opinion small animal practice and a referral service for Ophthalmology, Laparoscopy, Endoscopy, Surgery (to include laparoscopy), Dentistry, CT imaging and Cardiology. We have a fully equipped purpose built facility with new CT, ultrasound and Endoscopy suite.
We have been open since 2009 in our purpose-built practice to the highest hospital standards. In addition to the first opinion work, we offer referrals in ophthalmology, endoscopy, surgery, orthopaedics, CT scanning, cardiology, dentistry and physiotherapy.
The practice is exceptionally equipped e.g. on-site CT scanner, digital x-ray, digital dental x-ray, range of flexible videoscopes/ fibre bronchoscope, rigid endoscopes, laparoscopy/thoracoscopy equipment, multiple capnographs/multiparameter monitors, ultrasound with range of probes, full range of surgical equipment, specialist ophthalmology equipment (slit lamps, tonometers, operating microscope etc).
Nurses participate in all areas of our different referral modalities. We strive to maintain high standards of care and nurture any interests that our nurses have and encompass it where we can in practice. We pride ourselves in offering excellent support for all new staff and students.
The practice consists of 6 permanent on site vets with visiting referral cardiology and dental teams plus a visiting physiotherapist. Whilst we are looking to expand the nursing team, we currently have five qualified RVN’s, one student and one ANA. There is lots more information about our referral services on our referral website.

Nurses work on a shift basis each shift with a different role to include kennels, prep, dirty ops and theatres and then lab and clinics are allocated each day to ensure everyone gets variety of roles and skills used. Our shift pattern is designed to promote a great work-life balance, allowing for a day off before and after a night shift and allowing a day off following a half weekend on call – we’re happy to chat you through the details!
We are looking for a qualified RVN or second year student to expand our small but fabulous team in South Devon. The nursing workload is predominantly referral ophthalmology based but also involves a mixture of first opinion small animal practice and other referral services for Laparoscopy, Endoscopy, Surgery, Dentistry, CT imaging and Cardiology.
We are also looking for an equally fabulous, hard working nurse or final year student with a mind towards anaesthesia/surgery. We are happy to support applicants with an interest in or keen to learn about advanced anaesthesia techniques and welcome you to join us in our strive for high standards and compassionate care. We believe strongly in bringing out the best in our nurses, and encourage self belief and confidence in order to provide an excellent standard of care for our patients.

A good candidate consists of eagerness to potentially step outside of their comfort zone and learn exciting new skills with lots of support from experienced staff. We have a small but perfectly formed amazing team of nurses, so the right candidate will need to be working within this team to achieve the goals of the practice. Whilst we aim to ensure the role is varied, there is no doubt that advanced theatre and anaesthesia techniques will play a large role so if you are interested in this aspect we would love to hear from you.
