Emergency Care

Emergency in practice hours: 01626 367 972 and press 2 for emergency.

Emergency outside practice hours: 01392 284217

If you have or are concerned you have an emergency situation ring the practice as soon as it is safe to do so. For calls within practice hours one of our receptionists will either advise you to comedown straight away or transfer you to a clinical member of staff.

If you have an emergency outside practice hours you will be transferred to our emergency out of hours provider EVEs, based next to St David’s train station in Exeter (EX4 4NT) who will be able to help.

EVEs is essentially an animal accident and emergency unit. There is a vet and nurse in the building over night who are ready to go at all times. Although we appreciate that it may be further to drive to the emergency centre we feel that the time taken to drive to EVEs is shorter or equivalent to the time it would take to get a vet and nurse to the practice and set up to deal with an emergency.

For patients who stay overnight at South Devon Veterinary Hospital we have 24hr on-site nursing.

Update 10/11/2021 – temporary change to hospitalisation arrangements.

Our arrangements have always been that if your pet is hospitalised with us before the practice closes, at 6.30pm during the week, that your pet will stay with us here to be looked after by our practice staff on site overnight.  Given the recent and ongoing demands on the veterinary profession, we are finding it hard to staff the practice 24/7 and have made the difficult decision to stop providing hospitalisation facilities over the weekend, from Friday night until Monday morning.  This unfortunately means that you would need to transport your pet up to Exeter yourself if 24 hour care were needed.  This does not impact on the overnight care that we will continue to provide during the week.  This is a temporary arrangement only and we are looking the return to our normal service as soon as we are able.
